Biography

After serving in World War I , he studied theology in Münster and Bonn and musicology with Ludwig Schiedermair .On February 18, 1923, he was ordained a priest in Cologne Cathedral . After a short pastoral assignment as a chaplain in Düsseldorf-Wersten , he began studying church music in Regensburg and Munich and passed the final exam with Eberhard Schwickerath . In 1925 he became vicar and Kapellmeister at the Aachen Cathedral and in 1945/46 acting music director of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra . With the reestablishment of the diocese of Aachen in 1930, Rehmann became cathedral conductor . He held this position until his death in 1963. He was noted for moving the repertoire away from Caecilianism, toward the works of Joseph Haas and Heinrich Lemacher, and toward the contemporary Flemish school of ere of activity of the Aachen Cathedral Choir internationally. He developed a special relationship with the contemporary Flemish music scene and cultivated the oeuvre of the composers Hendrik Andriessen, Flor Peeters, Arthur Meulemanns, and Julius van Nuffel.
