Contributor notes

I. What goes here:

A. Latin-texted liturgical pieces written or published between 1789 and 1964

1. “Liturgical” is defined loosely as “anything that could be used in the liturgy” Large scale chorus and orchestra pieces designed for concert use are excluded, but if there is evidence that such a work was used in the liturgy, it can be included. Favor inclusion over exclusion.

2. Vernacular versions of previously-published Latin works, published after 1964, may be included for completeness

II. How to create a composer page.

A. Add the composer to the composer list. Form of name (Last name first) should follow, in order of preference: Library of Congress authority files, VIAF, Most complete available form of name

C. Fill it in with the following information:

1. Dates: written-out month, day, year, location if known

2. Biography: Put what you know, more or less chronologically, avoiding opinion or interpretation

3. List of sacred works. More or less alphabetical by title. Collections should be entered under title of collections. If the collection has a manageable number of items (fewer than 12), titles of items should follow the title. Mass settings (excluding Requiems) should go under M. If Masses have ordinal or opus number, use them; otherwise, file by “M word” and what follows (Missa, Messe, whatever). In an ideal world, these would receive uniform titles as in a library catalog. For a number of good reasons, that isn’t happening.

a. Following the title, include instrumentation. For these purposes, “mixed chorus” is assumed to be SATB, “Male chorus” is TTBB. 2 (3) part equal voices is “2-part” , Alternatives are listed with a forward slash: “org/pf” or “Orch/org” or “Org/harm”. If an accompaniment line gives no indication of instrumentation, list it as “kbd”. Soloists in larger works need not be specified

b. Publisher information: Place, publisher, date. Pdfs will be linked to this. If there are YouTube recordings or other valuable information, add these after the publisher. Abbreviations that may be used: OD, GIA, JFB, MLR, WLSM

c. If an alternative publisher, scoring or arrangment exists, enter it beneath the original, using 2 bullet points.

4. Publications. Use this for print resources. I don’t care which citation system you use as long as it’s clear and complete

5. External links. This will generally be Wikipedia; if it’s a foreign language Wikipedia, add the language. Extra credit for using Infogalactic. Composer web pages etc. go here too, as well as open-source articles and dissertations.

6. Categories. Replace the data in the templates. Also add, as appropriate, “[name of state] composers” and “Composers in Holy Orders”

7. “Add name after” If you check any of these resources, add your name and the month-year, so that people don’t duplicate effort.
