Life

Died: March 23, 1971, Shaker Heights OH

Biography Louis Laszlo Balogh was born in Ujszasz, Hungary on February 9, 1898 to Kalman and Velma Balogh. He was educated at the National Conservator of Music in Budapest where he received a diploma in 1916. In 1932, he received a diploma from the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. The University of Budapest awarded him a Ph.D. in 1924 and Western Reserve University awarded him an M. A. in 1940. He studied viola and chamber music at Budapest (1919-1924); organ, conducting, and voice (1920-1923) with several teachers at Budapest; and organ with Alfredo Sittard at Hamburg (1924). Invited to Canada in 1925, Dr. Balogh was organist and choirmaster of St. Peter's Cathedral, and professor of music at St. Peter's Seminary in London, Ontario (1925-1928); director of music at St. Patrick's Church in Montreal (1928-1934); and director of music at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto and a teacher of voice, organ, and music theory at the Toronto Conservatory of Music (1934-1938). In March 1938, Balogh joined the faculty of John Carroll University and Notre Dame College in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and became organist and choirmaster of Gesu Church.
