Left for Augusta GA, where his band was impressed into the Confederate Army. Left to join the 7th /regiment Band, New York National Guard. Biography Studied music under his father, harmony and composition under William Volkmar. Worked in the tax department of Hessia until 1854. Arrived in New York City, March 1854. Worked as freelance baritone horn and violin player, and director in Southern US. Band director in Charleston SC at outbreak of Civil War.
