Biography Johann Friedrich La Trobe came from a Provençal Huguenot family. When his father died, he moved to Germany at a young age. He learned music at the school of the Moravian Brethren in Niesky near Görlitz and from 1787 to 1790 at the Moravian Seminary in Barby on the Elbe. He then studied medicine at the University of Jena, where he passed his exam in 1795.
